Textile Chamber

Welcome to the National Historical Museum's Textile Chamber.

Textilkammaren

How did people sew before sewing machines were invented? How can a fifteenth century fabric look so modern? Who could afford a fabric sewn with gold thread?

Our textiles collection is unique. We have many well-preserved tapestries and embroideries dating from the Middle Ages. Many of the textiles have been used in Swedish churches. We also have textiles from other parts of the world which came to Sweden through trade.

The textiles are full of symbols. They tell us about the period in which they were made. Studying them answers lots of unresolved questions.
