Medieval Art

Welcome to our exhibition about Medieval church art.

Medeltisdsutställningen

This exhibition shows many altarpieces from the Middle Ages.
They have lasted well because they were well looked after.
Altarpieces were placed above and behind the altar.
They are like picture books today.
Most people in the Middle Ages could not read.
They learned Bible stories from the pictures in the church.
The altarpieces show the story of the life and death of Jesus.
They show the stories and lives of the saints too.

What do you know about Sweden’s saint, Saint Birgitta?
Did you know she had eight children?
Borrow an audio guide and learn more about her exciting life.

The exhibition also includes fonts and other religious objects
such as missals, altar crosses and containers for bread and wine.
There is also a reconstruction of a small rural church.
The reconstruction shows what a church looked like
in Västergötland at the end of the Middle Ages.
