The Iron Age

The Iron Age in Scandinavia is between 500 BC and 1050 AD.
This is the time when iron begins to be common in Scandinavia.
The period between 500 BC and 550 AD is called the Early Iron Age.
The period between 550 and 1050 AD is called the Late Iron Age.
The Iron Age ends with the Viking period and is followed by the Medieval period, or the Middle Ages.

The Iron Age in the Nordic Countries lasts about 1,500 years.
That is a long time.
A lot of things happened in the rest of the world during that time.
In China they started building the Great Wall.
Alexander the Great was born and died.
The Roman Empire began and ended.
Christianity developed in Europe.

The people living here then did not think about Ages.
They did not say that they were living in the Iron Age.
The names Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age were invented much later.
It is later generations who divided the time up into periods.
This makes history easier to understand.

In the Iron Age not everything was made of iron.
There were bronze objects and pottery.
But most things were made of stone, wood, horn or bone.
