Guided tours
History can be exciting and challenging, giving us new perspectives on ourselves and our own time. Our collections span thousands of years – from the Stone Age to the present day.
They provide an excellent opportunity to tell the story of mankind and our material culture over a very long period. However, we also want to shed light on things which are harder to encapsulate – thoughts and ideas, memories and the forgotten past, and the way life is portrayed.
Borrow an audio guide
Audio guides for several of the museum’s exhibitions can be borrowed free of charge from the information desk. Our audio guides are easy to use and our staff will be happy to show you how they work. Audio guides are available in Swedish, English, German, French and Spanish. At the moment, the text is not adapted for children. The number of audio guides is limited and we are unable to provide audio guides for an entire class.
Come down into the Gold Room and gaze in wonder at the riches and craftsmanship on display. The Gold Room is home to Sweden’s foremost gold and silver treasures, a total of 52 kg of pure gold and over 200 kg of silver.
You can also meet the Vikings thanks to one of the museum’s archaeologists who provides a fascinating introduction to ten of the key points in our Vikings exhibition.
Or why not find out about the life of Saint Birgitta in our exhibition of Medieval Ecclesiastical Art? Saint Birgitta has been cursed, called a saint, and hailed as a great politician. Who was she really? Our exhibition provides an insight into Birgitta the child, the mother, the widow and the saint.
In the museum’s Prehistories exhibition you can spend several hours finding out more about our prehistoric ancestors.
Follow a history trail
Our exhibitions on the Viking period and the Middle Ages offer a history trail designed for children to follow with an adult, enabling them to discover the exhibition interactively.
The printed History Trail leaflet for families with children aged 6 and over is available free of charge. It gives children and adults the opportunity to walk through the exhibitions together, inspiring each other.
The trail is divided into two parts, one for the child and one for the accompanying adult. The children’s sheet contains interesting questions, the answers to which can all be found in the exhibition.
The adult’s sheet contains additional information and the answers to the questions, if you need them. The trail is a rewarding and exciting activity for you and your child.
